Three Wheeled Buggies
Whether you’re looking for a buggy to run around in or a nifty stroller to tackle neighbourhood walks, three wheeled buggies (here are the findings) are great for mobility. Their compact design allows them to be maneuvered easily even in tight areas.
For a smooth ride, opt for a pram that has air-filled tyres. Look for models with 360deg front swivel wheels. They are susceptible, however to punctures. Be prepared with an emergency repair kit.
Sturdy frame
New figures show that three-wheeled buggies, the symbol of the noughties that were more expensive than common sense, are in a steep decline. They’ve been replaced with four-wheelers that are able to be more versatile in terrain, yet still look stylish and easy to push.
The rule is that the bigger the wheels are, the easier it will be for your buggy to cope with bumpy and rough pavements. The larger wheels, both front and rear enable you to maneuver and more stable while walking downhill or in difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tried this buggy on the newborn baby and a toddler and found it very sturdy. It handled grass, cobbles and rough pavements, aswell as dirt tracks and kerbs. She said “it feels sturdy to push and is very stable when traversing difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable so need occasionally pumping) offer built-in suspension which was extremely comfortable for my children.
Another thing to consider is the size and shape. It should be big enough for your child’s comfort and you will also want it to be able to recline for them to lie flat. Some three-wheel buggies have the option of lying flat, which lets your child face you, while other buggies only allow a parent-facing one.
A great option for those who want to tackle off-road or muddy walks is the Roma Atlas. It can be used as a single unit from the beginning and can be modified to take two children when your family expands. It is suitable for toddlers and infants from birth until age 4, and includes a bumper and raincover, a new 5-point harness, and a big cushioned seat. Storage options are also a plus, with a large basket with zip pockets on the hood, and an attractive pouch at the rear of seat unit.
Wheels with a greater diameter
Larger wheels mean your buggy will have more stability on uneven terrain, which is ideal for off-road buggies. They also allow you to move the pushchair around tight spaces. Many three wheel pushchairs wheeled buggies have the front wheels that swivel to help you navigate around tight corners, while others are specifically designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability with which they can be pushed. This can also help when you crash into a tree root or stray curb, since the front wheel can be lifted up a bit to prevent you from hitting it.
Many 3 wheel pushchairs feature air-filled tyres. This means they are able to handle many different terrains and are more adaptable than 4-wheelers. They also tend to be lighter. They are more prone to punctures, so you will require an repair kit and spare inner tube in your arsenal.
Mountain Buggy Core, Venicci Carbo and Venicci Carbo Lux are some of our favourite 3 wheel strollers-wheelers. Both buggies feature larger wheels that, according to MFM reviewer Kath, “perform really well on grass, gravel tracks and market town cobbles” and can easily go up and down kerbs. The buggies also have a suspension that Kath says “smooths out bumps very effectively”.
Buggies with bigger wheels can be quite wide, and they may be a challenge to fit into narrow spaces. This can be an issue especially if you’re using it to an exercise bike or to maneuver through doors that are narrow when out and about. The majority of models come with compact folding options that allow you to remove the front wheels and store them in a more compact manner.
Easy to maneuver
One of the main benefits of a three-wheel buggy is that it is much easier to maneuver, especially with a child in the back. They are designed to ensure that the front wheels be turned on a dime and are easy to move, making them ideal for challenging terrain such as parks, cobblestones as well as bumpy roads and dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tested a 3 wheeler pushchairs from birth wheeler with her infant and toddler and wrote: “The Terrain was a pleasure to navigate over the rough ground with the swivel rear wheel particularly useful. I was also awed by the way it handled the kerbs, particularly when using the hand-operated brake. It was very stable for descending or on a rough terrain.”
The only drawback of this incredible maneuverability is that the 3 wheel buggy’s bigger wheels sometimes mean it has to be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces – something to be aware of when you live in a urban area. If this is an issue, a 4-wheeled buggy may be the better option for you.
Bumper bar
Bumper bars protect your child from scrapes and bumps when out and about. They are easy to install and will help your child feel safe and secure out and about.
Created to match the sleek lines of your Slim Twin stroller, this bumper bar has a soft and padded surface that offers an ideal place for your child to hold onto while walking. The sturdy construction and durable design will ensure that your child is comfortable strolling around town without worrying about falling or leaning towards the side.
The fabric sling sits snugly inside the frame it is not positioned on top like the modular seat. This provides a lower center of gravity for your baby at the right height and also provides an excellent weight distribution, making it easier to pop over curbs (it is much easier to push a stroller up and down than you think). MFM reviewer Kath said it’s great on grass and cobbles. It’s also a great option for running with its air-filled tyres as well as a locking swivel wheels.
This bumper bar will turn heads wherever it is used. It has a classy and elegant appearance. Available in a range of finishes and colours, it can be customized to fit your style. It features a simple, quick-release mechanism that makes it easy to install and remove the bumper bar whenever needed. Kath, our MFM reviewer, also loved the spaciousness of this buggy. There’s a huge easy-to-access basket that’s huge for a buggy this small as well as an excellent zip-up pouch on the back of the seat and two smaller mesh pockets in the hood for your keys and phone.
