If you’re seeking a buggy to run around in or a nifty stroller to tackle strolls around the neighborhood, three-wheeled buggies are great for mobility. Their compact design makes it easy to maneuver even in tight spots.
If you’re looking for a smooth ride with your baby, select models with 360deg front wheels with swivel. However, they are more prone to punctures, so be prepared with a repair kit.
Frame made of sturdy material
New data show that three-wheeled buggies that were the symbol of the noughties that were more expensive than common sense, are in a steep decline. Four-wheelers have replaced them, which are more versatile and easy to drive while still looking stylish.
The larger the wheels are, the more your buggy will be able to deal with bumpy and uneven pavements. The larger wheels both rear and front enable you to move and more stable when walking downhill or on difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tried this buggy on the newborn baby and a toddler and found it to be very robust. It was able to handle cobbles, grass and rough pavements as well as dirt tracks and kerbs. Kath said that “it feels sturdy to push and extremely solid when you’re on rough terrain. The tyres, that are inflated and require to be pumped up occasionally, have built-in suspension. This was extremely comfortable for my children.
Another thing to think about is the size of the seat and shape. The seat should be large enough to allow your child to feel comfortable and allow them to lie down. Some three-wheel buggies will have the option of reclining completely, while others will only allow the parent to be facing one.
The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road and walking in muddy areas. This buggy can be used as a single unit from birth and then adapts to accommodate two children as your family expands. It is suitable for infants and toddlers up to age 4 and comes with a bumper bar, raincover, an improved 5-point harness and large cushioned seat unit. The storage options are great as well, with a large basket, zip pockets on the hood and a handy pouch on the back of the seat unit.
Larger wheels
Larger wheels mean your buggy will be more stable on rough terrain – ideal for off-road buggies. They also make it easier to manoeuvre the pushchair in tight spaces. Many three wheeled buggies have swivel front wheels to aid you in maneuvering around corners with ease, whereas others are specifically designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability with the speed at which they can be pushed. This also helps if you bump into a tree root or stray road, as the front wheel can be lifted up to keep you from hitting it.
Many lightest 3 wheel stroller wheel pushchairs feature air filled tyres which means they can be used on different terrains and are more adaptable than 4-wheelers. They also tend to be lighter. However, they’re susceptible to punctures so you’ll need to keep a repair kit, spare inner tube and pump in your bag.
Our top three-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. These buggies, as per MFM’s Kath, have larger wheels which according to her “perform well on gravel roads, grass and market town cobbles” and are able to move up and down kerbs. They also have suspension that Kath says “smooths out bumps with great efficiency”.
Buggies with bigger wheels can be quite wide and can be difficult to fit in tight spaces. This can be a problem if you use it for jogging 3 wheel stroller or you need to get through doorways that are narrow while out and about. The majority of models come with compact folding options, which allow you to remove the front wheels and store them in a more compact manner.
Easy to Manoeuvre
A three-wheeler can be more comfortable to drive with a child. The way they are built ensures that the front wheels spin on a dime and are extremely easy to maneuver, making them ideal for difficult terrain such as parks, cobbles and bumpy pavements as well as dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tried a 3 wheel tandem stroller-wheeler with her newborn and toddler and wrote: “The Terrain was a pleasure to navigate over the rough ground and the swivel front wheel being especially helpful. I was also amazed by the way it dealt with kerbs using the hand-operated break. I found it extremely stable when driving downhill or over uneven terrain.”
The only drawback to this amazing maneuverability is that the larger wheels of a 3 wheel buggy can sometimes make it difficult to fit into tight spaces. This is something to be aware of when you live in a city. If this is a problem then a 4-wheeled buggy could be the better option for you.

Kath the MFM reviewer, also appreciated the spaciousness of the buggy. There’s an easily accessible, large basket that is surprisingly spacious for a buggy that’s this big. There’s also a handy pouch on the back seat unit, as well as two smaller mesh pockets under the hood to keep your phone and keys.
