Ladders or Stairs
You can pick between stairs and ladders when you are choosing bunk beds for children. Ladders can be easily installed and are less expensive. They also provide an easy way to get into the top bunk bed. They are more secure than stairs, since they provide a greater surface area for children to walk on and include an integrated handrail. Ladders usually have grooves in the steps to prevent slips when climbing up and down the bed.
However, if you prefer the design and style of stairs, they can be a more elegant option to your bunk bed. Staircases are also ideal for rooms that are small on space, as they don’t obstruct the room as ladders do. They can be constructed from wood or metal and are able to match a wide range of bedroom styles. Some staircases come with storage drawers which can be a great way to increase the size of a bunk bed.
Another thing to take into consideration when deciding between stairs or a ladder is the age of your child. It is recommended that children younger than 6 years old not sleep on the top bunk. Older children who can climb vertically could be better off with stairs than climbing a ladder. Additionally, if you’re planning on using your bunk bed as guest beds for smaller children or adults with limited mobility stairs are the most suitable option.
A straight staircase that runs along the side of the bed will require 95″ of space on either side. If you don’t have this much space, you can opt for a u-shaped stairs that doesn’t require as much space but still offers a secure and safe method of getting to the top bunk. Some beds allow you to remove the stairs when they are not in use. This reduces the size of the bed and makes it more adaptable to multi-purpose spaces. You can also find stairs that connect to the end the bed. This eliminates the need for separate handrails and makes it easier to climb up and to the bottom for children.
Guard Rails
Guard rails give children the confidence and freedom to climb into and out of beds on their own. But they must be positioned properly, making sure that there are no gaps or movement occurs between guard rails and the bed frame. If you decide to use guard rails, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and check them on a regular basis for any looseness or holes that could potentially lead to entrapment.
Keep bunk beds out of electrical appliances and other things that could become projectiles when your children are playing or sleeping. Be sure to place bunks away from windows, as they could be a danger to fall when children climb up to the top floor.
You might want to put an evening light on the ladder so that it can illuminate the way up and down in the event that your child gets up at the end of the night to use the bathroom, or if they are woken by an erupting storm and have to leave their room.
A safety net can be put up on top of the bunk to stop children from falling off while they sleep or play. This is a great idea, especially for older children who tend to sleep on the top bunk.
The guardrails must be secured to the bunk beds and cannot be removed without tools. The openings in the guardrails over the mattress foundation must not be more than 3.5 inches to avoid entrapment and strangulation. Place the wedge block as shown on Figure 1 in each opening of the uppermost guardrail member, and above the mattress foundation. Apply a force of 33 lbf (147 N) in a perpendicular direction to the plane of the largest edge of the block for one minute.
It is also recommended to teach kids not to hang things on the guardrails or ladder, like clothing, belts and sports equipment; instead a rack for clothes is recommended to ensure that the objects don’t become a strangulation hazard for your child(ren). Make sure that no more than one child can sleep on the top bunk. This could result in a dangerous imbalance and falls.
Mattresses
When choosing a mattress to use for bunk beds, think about your child’s size and age. A bunk mattress should last at the least eight years or until siblings are no longer sharing a bedroom. You should select one that can grow with your child, but still provide enough comfort as they get older.
Bunk mattresses are usually twin or full-size, and there are plenty of alternatives that will be suitable for either. If your child has asthma or allergies, choose an allergy-free mattress that has an anti-dust barrier and a moisture-wicking cover. Kids are likely to experience lots of spills and accidents, so mattresses with an antimicrobial layer will help keep the foam safe from harmful bacteria and germs.
Another factor to consider is the feeling of your mattress. Children are typically heavier than adults and require mattresses that are firm, yet comfortable. Many latex and hybrid mattresses have a firm side and a soft side to meet children’s needs.
Memory foam mattresses are great for kids but we don’t recommend them due to their tendency not to cool effectively and can be hard on the spines of young children. Consider a hybrid or a latex mattress, which offers strong support and cooling infusions that allow your child or guests to sleep comfortably.
A mattress with a low profile is usually the best bunk beds for kids option for best kids bunkbeds bunk beds. They are designed to be thinner than regular mattresses, and maximize the safety rail’s height on the top bunk. They eliminate “filler” materials to provide premium quality with slim lines.
Think about an innerspring model or a hybrid with upper comfort layers that can be removed and replaced as your child grows. These models can provide you with an idea of the mattress’s durability as your child grows. You can also add a bed skirt or mattress pad to stop it from sliding. Some beds have a built-in lip or side rails to prevent this from happening.
