Additionally, they can usually be used to cook both hot and cold dishes, eliminating the need for additional appliances, such as toasters or warming plates.
DOE conducts various analyses when evaluating potential amendments to energy conservation standards. These include assessments of technology and market screening analyses, engineering analyses, and a national impact analysis (NIA). For this SNOPR, DOE will rely on its current engineering analysis of microwave ovens to determine the maximum efficiency improvements that are technologically feasible for this product class.
In the engineering analysis, DOE will compare the design parameters of a microwave with an energy performance set of objectives. The engineering analysis will then determine the maximum improvement in energy efficiency that is technologically feasible based on the most advanced microprocessor-controlled model available on the market or in working prototypes, or the maximum reduction in energy consumption that is technically achievable with the current technologies available for this product class.
As part of the NIA, DOE will evaluate the effects on consumers for each product category including lifecycle cost savings as well as simple payback period (“PBP”). DOE will employ its Government Regulatory Impact Model with an adaptation for microwave ovens to calculate industry net present value (“NPV”).
Manufacturer impacts will be evaluated as well and DOE will employ a modified version of its Industry Cash Flow model, which has been adapted to this particular product type to calculate the manufacturing NPV. In addition, DOE will consider the potential impact on small business manufacturers and other manufacturer subgroups to determine if they could be affected in a different way by these proposals.
DOE will also examine whether the test procedure for Microwave Oven Built-in ovens has to be updated in order to include active mode power consumption as well as a possible integrated combi microwave energy use metric. Currently, tests only include standby mode power consumption.
Design
Microwaves generate heat by causing water molecules vibrate in food. Wall ovens rely upon the circulation of hot air, while microwaves depend on waves to cause food molecules to vibrate. Combination wall ovens combine these two different appliances into a single unit that can be used to save kitchen space and offers a sleek, modern aesthetic. However, it is important to take into consideration your budget and goals before deciding to purchase a combination wall oven. Some of the combo ovens we evaluated have performance or design issues.
