In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.
If this sensor fails the ECU will show the P00160 error, Audi Smart Key Replacement which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren’t in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won’t appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It is a little tricky to test since there are several pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you’re experiencing issues with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when i turn the engine on without sparks, Audi A3 Spare Key the three that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car can start if the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is connected however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.
I’m not sure what to do. I feel like i’ve pretty much ruled everything else out. I’m worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector’s end facing upwards). 4. ECU
