1. Smeg BCC02
This sleek compact and striking machine, designed by Milan-based firm Deep Design combines the brand’s retro aesthetic with the latest technology. This machine handles all stages of the coffee-making process from grinding beans to making a puck, then making milk into a texturing, before dispensing the correct amount.
The machine also has an elegant brushed aluminium front and is available in a choice of red, black or taupe, meaning it’s easy to integrate into most kitchen designs. It’s not without faults however: the majority of reviewers found it a little expensive for a bean to cup maker (and it doesn’t include an insulated milk pitcher).
There were numerous glowing reviews about the machine’s ease of use as well as the quality of its coffee. The digital display is intuitive and provides step-by-step guidance and feedback throughout the making process, allowing you to perfect your drink every time. It even allows you to adjust the grind size if not exactly right. It’s like having a personal home barista (minus Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak, and Elon Musk’s rocket-building abilities).
This model is ideal for those who prefer milky drinks. The steam wand is adjustable to the right and left to fit a variety of drinking vessels, excluding Viking drinking horns. We were also awed by the speed and efficiency at which the frothing was done. It also makes an excellent espresso, with a great crema and full flavour despite its compact size.
The BCC02 is a fantastic all-rounder, quiet and efficient and provides great value for money, especially at its current price of PS499. The only issue is that it does not provide the same level of customisation like other bean-to-cup machines we have tried. Its pump is 15 bars rather than the usual 19 bars. This isn’t enough for producing top-quality espressos. This is a fantastic machine for those who like their coffee strong and dark. Click here to see Lavazza’s great deal.
