Choosing uPVC Replacement Window Handles
Window handles are an integral part of uPVC frames and must match the frame that is currently in use. The spindle size is what determines whether your new uPVC handles will fit.
Use the table below as a quick reference to measure the spindle length of your uPVC handle. This will ensure you order the appropriate replacement window handle for your double glazed window.
Espag Handle
Espag handles are the most common design of handle used on windows made of upvc (they’re also commonly used in aluminium and wood too). They feature an oval spindle that extends from the back of the handle and enters into the multi-point lock mechanism which is attached to the window. By turning the handle you operate the system that locks and unlocks the locking points around the window.
Espag window handles are available in many different styles and functions. Some come with a push button for a locked closed position, and key-locking. (And nonlocking for fire escape in the event of need.) Many of them meet the Secure by Design standard to provide an extra level of security. They also come with a range of different lengths of spindles, that can be adjusted using spindle sleeves that decrease the size of the protruding spindle.
Yale has examined the espagnolette handles we provide to ensure they meet the requirements you would expect. They work with Upvc windows, timber windows and frames made of aluminum. We have a selection of colours available along with an option to match the handle to the hinges you already have.
The step height is another important aspect of espagnolette handle. This is the distance from the end of the handle to the point where it is placed on the frame, so it’s essential to make sure it’s right to ensure a secure and tight fit. Fortunately, a majority of our handle styles are in line with industry standards, with 43mm between screw hole centres.
As with other types of handles you have the choice between straight and Cranked designs. Cranked handles can be used in situations where the espagnolette handle is close to the frame edge. They give you more space to open up the window.
Our upvc replacement handle range features a wide variety of finishes, styles and colours to suit your home’s decor, including polished chrome, antique brass, and satin nickel. Some of our handles feature a soft-close mechanism to reduce the sound of windows slamming shut.
Cockspur Handle
The Cockspur Window Handle is a handle designed specifically for the fabricator who wishes to offer their customers a stylish and premium design. These handles can be used with upvc door handle replacement windows or aluminium frames. They function by using a spur that locks over the frame edge to secure the window. The window handle can also be lockable, so that it will only open when it is pushed. This adds additional security. The handle is available in five different finishes, both left and right handed versions. This allows fabricators to accommodate more windows.
These cockspur window handles are supplied with 3 packing pieces of different thickness, which allows them to be adjusted for a wide range of backset sizes. Each piece fits snugly under the handle’s nose and can be removed or inserted into the size of the step in order to achieve a different amount of backset, ranging from 9mm to 21mm. The handle comes in left and right handed versions, with straight or curved noses.
It is crucial to determine your current handle height before buying a new handle to ensure it will fit correctly. The wrong handle can cause a range of issues, including the inability of the window to be closed. This could be a headache for homeowners and cause unnecessary stress.
A cockspur handle is found on older uPVC or timber windows. These types of handles do not have any kind of window lock, as opposed to an Espag handle that is used on more modern windows, which include shootbolts and an Espagnolette bar window lock.
The espagnolette (often shortened to ‘espag’) handle is the most popular type of handle used on the new uPVC casement windows. The Yale Encloser locking mechanism is activated when you turn the handles on the espagnolette. This is a lot safer than a traditional cockspur handle or British standard handle. This is because when you turn the handle espagnolette it rotates multiple locks within the window frame to secure it.
Handle by turning and tilting
These windows are a very popular choice for homeowners seeking to improve the airflow in their home, while providing an added level of security. As the name suggests, they have a turn and tilt function which allows the window to open up at 90 degrees, providing a small opening or to fall down into a hopper-style design for full ventilation. Dual functionality makes them look attractive that can greatly enhance the wow factor of your double glazing window handle glazed windows.
Tilt and turn windows are more complicated than other styles of double glazed windows, which can increase their cost as they require more parts and additional labour during installation. They are worth the investment because they bring value and offer numerous advantages to your home.
The primary benefit of these ladders is that you are able to clean your windows without using external ladders. This is ideal for those who live in high-rise buildings or flats as it eliminates the need to go outside and the risk of falling from the high height. Tilt-and-turn windows provide extra security, since they lock when in a tilted state. This means that burglars cannot open them from the inside.
