Study of Chinese Learners’ Pedagogical Choices in Korean

The DCT for instance, is unable to account for cultural and individual differences. Additionally, the DCT is prone to bias and may cause overgeneralizations. Therefore, it should be analyzed carefully before it is used for research or assessment purposes.

Despite its limitations, the DCT can be a useful instrument to study the relationship between prosody, information structure, and non-native speakers. Its ability to manipulate social variables relevant to politeness in two or more steps could be a benefit. This ability can aid researchers study the role of prosody in communicating across cultural contexts, a major challenge in cross-cultural pragmatics.

In the field of linguistics, DCT is one of the most effective tools used to analyze the communication habits of learners. It can be used to study various aspects that include politeness, turn-taking, and lexical choices. It can be used to evaluate the level of phonological sophistication in learners speaking.

Recent research utilized a DCT as an instrument to test the refusal skills of EFL students. Participants were presented with various scenarios and were required to choose a suitable response from the choices provided. The MQ data was analyzed first to determine the participants’ practical choices. The data were classified according to Ishihara’s (2010) definition of pragmatic resistance. Then, we compared the choices with their linguistic performance on DCTs to determine if they were indicative of pragmatic resistance. Additionally, the participants were asked to explain their decision to use pragmatic language in a given scenario.

The results of the MQs and DCTs were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and z-tests. The CLKs were found employ euphemistic phrases such as “sorry” or “thank you”. This could be due to their lack of familiarity with the target languages, which led to a lack of understanding of korean pragmatic norms. The results showed that CLKs’ preferences for either converging to L1 or diverging from both L1 and L2 pragmatic norms varied by the DCT situations. The RIs showed that CLKs knew about their practical resistance to each DCT situation. The RIs were conducted one-to-one basis within two days of the participants completing the MQs. The coding results were then contrasted with the original RI transcripts, which gave an indication of how well the RIs captured the underlying pragmatic behavior.

Recent research has attempted to answer this question with various experiments, including DCTs MQs and RIs. Participants included 46 CLKs and 44 CNSs from five Korean Universities. They were required to complete the DCTs in their first language and complete the MQs either in their L1 or their L2. They were then invited to an RI, where they were asked to think about and discuss their responses to each DCT situation.

The results showed that CLKs, on average, did not adhere to the norms of native speakers in more than 40% of their responses. They did this even though they were able to create patterns that resembled natives. In addition, they were conscious of their own pragmatism. They attributed their resistance to learner-internal variables such as their personality and multilingual identities. They also spoke of external factors like relational advantages. For instance, they outlined how their relationships with professors facilitated a more relaxed performance in relation to the linguistic and intercultural rules of their university.

But it would be prudent for future researchers to reconsider their applicability in specific situations and in different cultural contexts. This will allow them to better comprehend how different environments may impact the pragmatic behavior of L2 learners in the classroom and beyond.
