If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it might be time to replace it. This is a serious issue since you won’t be in a position to lock or unlock the door and put you and your family at risk.
It is also a good idea to replace your door handle when it’s damaged or broken. A broken door handle is risky, particularly for children and elderly family members who may struggle to open it. They could become trapped. Luckily, it’s quite simple to fix a damaged door handle by replacing the handle that was broken.
Modern door handles are usually standard sizes and will fit any door. If you’re not sure if your new door handle will fit, try taking out the old one and measuring the holes in its housing. This will enable you to purchase the correct size door handle.
The easiest way to take off your old double glazed door handle handle is to unscrew it from the door itself. Usually you’ll need a screwdriver. Some door handles come with an enclosure plate that hides the mounting screws. You will need to remove it to get to the screws. After removing the old handle, take note of the way in which the spindle has been connected. This will help you align the new handle.
You can also remove the door handle by unscrewing the latch mechanism. You can use a screwdriver for removing the door handle. However, you’ll have to locate the tiny latch, which is located on the edge trim piece. After taking off the latch, remove the handle and the strike plate. Then remove the latch from the door’s edge.
Removal of the Strike Plate
If you are replacing your handle, you’ll also want to replace the latch plate, which holds the hole that the door’s latch hooks into when it closes. The new handles will come with two latch plates which are a circular and a rectangular plate (see the diagram above that shows the parts of a door handle). If your current latch plate is a rectangular shape, switch it to a round one, so that the latch hooks into the strike plate in a manner that makes the handle more comfortable to use.
The first step is to unhook the screw that holds the old latch plate. The screws are typically tight and require a lot of force to loosen them. If you can, it might be beneficial to have another person assist with this part.
After the screws have been removed the latch should slide out of the door easily. If it’s stuck or won’t move, use a small nail file to scrape the edges of the latch plate. This may help free the plate.
Now, you can proceed to creating the new door strike plate for installation. Install the latch plate in the doorjamb using the wood screws that were included with your new handles for Bifold doors. Be careful not to tighten too much the screws, as this may cause damage to the strike plate.
If you’re not sure if the latch plate is in the proper position Try closing and opening the door to check whether it latches and closes correctly. If not then you’ll have to adjust the strike plate either up or down, or even forward or back until the door shuts and latches properly.
If the door is still moving or jiggling, then you may need to increase the size of the hole for latching in the strike plate. This is more common with older doors, but can happen due to wear and tear hinge mortises that are too shallow or the wrong size for the latch, or because of damage or a broken strike plate. If this is the situation you can use a metal file instead of a chisel, or hammer to adjust the strike plate.
Eliminating the Latch
The latch is a curved metal piece that slides into and out of a hole on the inside of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes this latch forward, allowing you to open the door. It also connects to a hole in the door frame to keep the door shut. If your door is wobbling when you close, a new latch may be all that is needed to fix the problem.
The screws that hold the door latch are difficult to locate however, you can insert a screwdriver into a small hole on the trim plate, and then pull the latch off. After you’ve removed your trim plate, it should be easy to remove the latch as well as the remaining bolts that hold the latch and spindle in the position.
If the latch isn’t able to be released, try using the clip of a paper or tool to release it from the handle mechanism. Place the item into the recessed latch slot and gently twist it or jiggle until you feel the that the latch and handle are beginning to split. It may take this several times before the latch comes loose enough to let it out.
You should be able to slide the new latch into its slot without any problems after you have removed the old one. Make sure that the latch is positioned correctly in the slot and lined up with the screw chambers, and then use your new screws to secure it to the strike plate and door frame.
Check the backset of the current handle (the distance between the centre of the large hole on the door’s front and the edge) before installing the new handle. Make sure that the size of the latch of the new handle matches the measurement.
You’ll require a new lock cylinder if you’re replacing the latch and handle or if your current one is damaged. If you’re not changing window handles the locks the new latch should fit in your existing recess and will work with your current keys. Make sure you select the latch with a rectangular cover plate that match the handles you have.
